New Novel Takes Readers on Rock 'n' Roll Road Trip across the U.S.

Jam Archer and Wild Dalton by Anne Rudeen, touted as “a sexy, funny, breathless ride,” follows the adventures of a rock star and his savvy female manager

SOUTH SALEM, N.Y. -- December 9, 2008 -- Set against the backdrop of the early '80s music scene, new novel Jam Archer and Wild Dalton, the latest book by Anne Rudeen, follows the rollicking adventures of a free-spirited woman and a hot young rock 'n' roll superstar as they take off across the country one jump ahead of his fans.

Written as a love-letter to rock and roll, the story begins when heartthrob Danny Dalton strolls into high school substitute teacher Jam Archer's biology class and plays his guitar. Jam becomes the manager of the successful rock band Wild Dalton, but trouble lies ahead. Famous too young, Danny develops "rock star block," the band breaks up and Jam thinks fast to save Danny's sanity and his career. She runs away with him on a cross-country trip where their relationship soon blossoms into hot romance. But there's something Danny doesn't know – to keep the fans interested, Jam has put up a $200,000 reward for anybody who spots him anywhere in the country, and she secretly keeps Rolling Stone aware of their adventures.

"My inspiration was Huckleberry Finn, outwitting fate while rafting down the Mississippi," the writer says. The author of four previous novels – Summerblood and American Royal under her own name and Tessa of Destiny and Green Lady writing as Leigh Ellis – light-hearted Jam Archer and Wild Dalton is her favorite tale. "I think it's what people need right now – a road novel with a strong heroine who's having fun, and is also very funny."

In researching the book, Rudeen toured with the rock band Eight-Eyed Spy, regularly attended the New Orleans Jazz festival and cheered at concerts all over the United States.

Kirkus Discoveries describes the book as, “On the road with one hot mama…Rudeen channels countercultural icon Tom Robbins in this ribald tale of an AWOL rock star and his libidinous manager, traveling incognito and leaving a trail of scorched bed sheets across the groovily genial late-’70s American landscape… This puerile premise is remarkably rendered not only bearable but outright charming and, finally, affecting, due to Rudeen’s appealing cast of quirky characters… and the winning personality of Jam… Jam’s hyperactive scheming, off kilter but relatable observations about the world, endearing neuroses about her appearance and more-than-healthy sex drive make her wonderfully entertaining company… A sexy, funny, breathless ride.”
