Historical Novel Explores Love Triangle Set against the Vietnam War Era
The Iron Triangle, by career soldier Joe Rhinehart, examines what happens when two wartime officers fall in love with the same Korean beauty
KENNESAW, GA -- December 17, 2008 -- The Iron Triangle, a new book by Joe Rhinehart, delves into the lives and loves of a generation of soldiers battling in Vietnam.
Former lieutenant colonel and West Point English instructor Rhinehart derives inspiration from actual events and people in his historical novel about war and love, The Iron Triangle. In the novel, a young lieutenant stationed in Korea falls head-over-heels in love with a Korean girl. But suddenly, another officer who outranks him falls in love with her as well. Deployed to Vietnam, the lieutenant must battle a tough and determined enemy, even as he is haunted by the love he left behind.

Felled by kidney cancer shortly after completing this novel, Rhinehart intended The Iron Triangle to be his legacy. He wanted to honor his wife and family, and also to explore the camaraderie among soldiers, regardless of race or religion, as they face a common and deadly enemy. Americans, Rhinehart suggests, were not conquerors, but defenders of liberty and justice, and in his novel, he hoped to make this notion come alive.
