A Cell's Opportunity by high school student Shahab Sharifian strives to explain cell mitosis for young adult audiences

ROLLING HILLS, Calif. – A Cell's Opportunity, a new instructional science book by high school student Shahab Sharifian, seeks to explain the complicated process of cell mitosis to young adults through the story of a soccer-playing cell named George. The book outlines what happens to George as he undergoes the process of mitosis, or separation that creates two identical cells.

Author Sharifian was inspired to write the book after witnessing the confusion in his seventh-grade science class over cell structures. “Mitosis is not as difficult to understand as it initially seems,” Sharifian explains. “Learning its processes in baby steps makes it much easier to understand.”

Featuring full-color illustrations to explain key concepts, A Cell's Opportunity explains mitosis through George’s attempts to join a soccer team. As the story opens, George’s coach explains that in order to make the team, each cell must create an identical back-up to play for them in case of injury. The following chapters reveal how George undergoes mitosis and creates a second cell, allowing him to take the field.

Blending science with fictional characters, the book explains cell concepts including prophase, metaphase, and cytokinesis. Sharifian details the mitosis process through a series of small steps, advancing the narrative as George achieves each new phase of the transformation.
