Pediatric Obesity Nurse Releases Children's Book Illustrating Importance of Kids Eating Right and Staying Active to Keep Healthy

In Cassy Eng's brightly illustrated children's book, The Alley Pal Adventures: Healthy Choices, a dog, rat and an intellectual alley cat teach kids about good nutrition and exercise

BROKEN ARROW, Okla. (MMD Newswire) February 11, 2009 -- A dog and cat are determined to help their plump rat friend and an unhealthy young boy get healthy in Cassy Eng's new children's book, The Alley Pal Adventures: Healthy Choices.

"Childhood obesity is a challenge of epidemic proportion," says Eng, a pediatric nurse. Committed to sharing important health and wellness concepts with children and their families in an inviting way, Eng crafted The Alley Pal Adventure Series. The first book in the series, Healthy Choices, is a story about three animal friends who learn about nutrition and exercise as they try to help an overweight school boy.

Louise, an intellectual alley cat tries her best to nourish and educate Sherman, a shaggy dog, and Gilbert, an overweight rat. Wanting them to be healthy, she teaches them about the food pyramid and about making good, healthy choices. But when the pals discover an overweight boy who won't join in and play with all the other kids, eats an endless stream of junk food for lunch and who is always miserable and alone, they decide to help. But how? The answer appears when the group finds a paper flyer for participants to train for the year-end relay race.

Being the mother of four kids, Eng understands the challenges of getting kids to eat right and get enough exercise. As a pediatric nurse, she has seen firsthand how kids tune-out traditional methods of delivering health and wellness information. "We need to introduce new and fresh ideas in order to get the point across to our kids the importance of making wise food and exercise choices," says Eng, "Healthy Choices presents a nonconventional and exciting way to deliver this important information by using the animals children love and a story that they can relate to."
