New Novel Rooted in Real-Life Tales of the Indian Neem Tree

Neem Dreams by globalist Inez Baranay reveals the complex life of modern and traditional India

PONDICHERRY, India (MMD Newswire) February 25, 2009 -- Neem Dreams, a new book by Inez Baranay, intends to intertwine and connect the quests of four characters from all corners of the world with the branches of the healthful neem tree in India. It's a symbolic story of East versus West, globalization and the ensuing collision of modern and traditional worlds, states Baranay.

Set in southern India in 1990, Neem Dreams follows Andy, an English lawyer and first-time visitor to India, who seeks a cure for HIV; Pandora, an Australian scientist researching a breakthrough women's project; Jade, from Australia, who needs neem skincare products for a new SoHo store; and Meenakshi, a beautiful woman who returns to her native India with her husband to work on a project that traces back to the family's neem factory. The plots of these four characters converge amidst growing international and intellectual property rights disputes, patent protests against neem-based products and local political and biopiracy tensions.

Neem Dreams was originally published in India in 2003, when Baranay, raised in Australia, received positive reviews for her "uncanny" ability as a foreigner to depict Indian reality and to avoid common Indian clichés. While her many trips to India began in 1980, she says, "I spent some time in 2000 and 2001 as a writer in residence at the University of Madras in Chennai, where my deepening relationship with friends there strengthened my ability to write about India from the inside."
