Asbestos Worries Unfounded at San Diego State University, According to Official

A statement released today by San Diego State University claims that there is no need to worry about possible asbestos exposure in the Nasatir Hall building. A news article published on Monday in the university’s newspaper, The Daily Aztec, stated that renovations in Nasatir and Storm Halls were delayed due to asbestos concerns.

Bob Shulz, Vice President of Operations, stated that delays in renovating the two buildings are attributed to the state of California’s “fiscal crisis,” and that there is no need for students and faculty to worry about asbestos.

Monday’s article in the university’s newspaper was entitled “Deaths may be linked to Nasatir.” The author, Kristina Blake, focused on the deaths of three people, all of whom had spent time in Nasatir Hall. The deceased include two former professors and a 26-year old graduate student. All three suffered and died from brain cancer.

Exposure to asbestos is not linked to the development of brain cancer; rather, university officials believe that some type of radiation - probably of natural origin - is possibly connected to the three deaths.

Concerns over asbestos in older buildings - especially on college campuses, where many of the structures are well over one hundred years old - is not uncommon. Like the majority of universities, San Diego State maintains a proactive approach to asbestos on campus, conducting inspections and air quality monitoring before any demolition or renovations occur.

Exposure to asbestos may lead to the development of lung cancer or mesothelioma, a fatal type of cancer.

Shulz also stated that a list of all campus buildings containing asbestos is available for download on the university’s website. The list was last updated on the first of the year, and includes the Aztec Center, the Communication building, Hardy Tower, and Love Library.
