City Employee Claims He Was Exposed To Asbestos

An unnamed employee for the city of Central Point, Oregon is claiming that he and other city employees were exposed to asbestos-containing materials while performing a demolition of a building located at 712 Manzanita Street. The complaint was called into the Department of Environmental Quality approximately one week following the completion of the job which took place on February 11th.

According to officials the debris from the demolition was already disposed of when the call came in but they have stated that ground testing can determine whether or not asbestos was involved during the demolition.

Exposure to asbestos-containing materials is a known cause of a number of diseases which often result in fatality. Such diseases include mesothelioma, lung cancer, and asbestosis. Because asbestos-caused diseases tend to have a significantly long latency period treatment options for those diagnosed are very limited. In many cases by the time such a disease is able to be diagnosed it is already in advanced stages of development, and the majority of asbestos cancer sufferers will lose their battle with the disease in less than two years.

Public Works Director Bob Pierce has stated that all the necessary steps were taken regarding demolition paperwork prior to the start of the demolition. Pierce has also stated that for future demolition jobs the building will be required to be tested for asbestos-containing materials before the job takes place.

Samples have now been taken at the site in order to determine whether or not asbestos was present and the results should be available within two weeks.
