CMTC Instrumental in Helping Businesses Save Energy

TORRANCE, Calif.--California Manufacturing Technology Consulting is an emerging leader in the campaign to help high tech and manufacturing businesses from Silicon Valley to Orange County become savvy about saving energy.

Gerald Church, the Director of Energy Services at CMTC, said the company is making businesses "lean and green" through a variety of creative methods. CMTC uses consumption audits, current and future state manufacturing process maps and implements specific changes in manufacturing operations to reduce the energy required to produce a unit of output. Using a unique energy efficiency model, CMTC is able to meticulously document the number of kilowatt-hours or therms a company has saved.

The centerpiece of CMTC's Energy Savings Program is its contract with California utilities to provide incentives to reduce energy costs for manufacturers and distributors. The VeSM Advantage Plus Program(TM) is a proven approach that measures energy use, identifies ways to squeeze out waste and verifies energy savings. Reinvesting energy savings by putting in a new furnace or boiler, for example, is better than keeping less-than-optimal equipment. Companies can reduce waste or extra work by catching errors early on.

The side benefits from this approach are enormous. When energy is saved, labor costs often goes down and productivity spikes. Church estimates that thousands of manufacturers in California could benefit from this program and 100 will be enrolled in the near future.

Details on this program were presented to the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy this year and to the World Energy Engineering Conference in 2005.

"We are going to warm this climate up with disastrous consequences," said Church. "To solve this problem, we need to design and implement a broad range of great energy savings programs and make them work in the marketplace now."
