U.S. Accuses European NATO Allies in Afghanistan of Incompetence, Gates Won't Back Down; EIN News Offers Extended Coverage

WASHINGTON, January 17 - /EIN News/ In a second incident of international friction among allies, U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates followed up Homeland Security's Michael Chertoff's pronouncements of the day before by accusing America's NATO allies in Europe of incompetence in fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan.

The reaction in Europe to this renewed and unexpected criticism was swift; a conservative British lawmaker called the remarks "outrageous", but the Dutch government has taken the unprecedented step of summoning the U.S. ambassador to Holland for an official explanation. The Dutch only recently pledged two more years of support for the mission in Afghanistan and took offense at the callousness of the remarks.

The Defense Department quickly wrote-off the Europeans' collective astonishment as overreaction. The Pentagon Press Spokesman defended Gates by adding that the Secretary often praised the efforts of the British and Canadians on the ground in Afghanistan, and pointed out that Gates recently made a phone call to the Canadian Defense Minister to single out the Canadians for unusual praise.

These remarks come one day after Michael Chertoff of Homeland Security suggested that tighter control of passengers from Europe will prevent the European "home grown" anti-American terrorism that he claims is taking root in many of the countries bound to the U.S. through NATO.
