Ralink Unveils Low-Cost 802.11n 1T2R Half-Sized Minicard Solution for Notebooks and PC's

CUPERTINO, Calif.--Ralink Technology Corp. announced today the launch of Ralink's RT2700 802.11n 1T2R (one transmit, two receive) chipset available in a half-sized PCIe minicard. The RT2700 chipset is ideal for notebook and desktop PC's and offers the high throughput and coverage of 802.11n at a price point approaching current 802.11b/g solutions. RT2700 based solutions can be certified for Wi-Fi Alliance's 802.11n draft 2.0 standard, and supports the latest Wi-Fi features such as 802.11i security, including Wi-Fi Protected Setup and 802.11e quality of service (QoS) which can prioritize voice and video over data transfers.

The RT2700 uses a 1T2R architecture, capable of up to 300 Mbps downstream and 150 Mbps upstream PHY rates. Most of the power for 802.11n designs is in the transmit circuitry. The RT2700 1T2R architecture offers a significant power savings and a bill of materials cost advantage since it has one less transmitter.

"The RT2700 chip shows Ralink's commitment to deliver cost-effective, robust solutions that drive mainstream Wi-Fi adoption," said Rick Jeng, Executive Vice President of Ralink Technology. "While Ralink is enjoying tremendous growth of our high performance draft 802.11n-based MIMObility(TM) solutions by leading Notebook and desktop PC manufacturers, we recognize an additional demand for Wi-Fi connectivity beyond 802.11b/g across the growing value Notebook and PC segments."

RT2700 is fully backward compatible with the existing industry wireless standards such as 802.11a, 802.11b and 802.11g. The chipset is currently available with an 802.11n evaluation board, reference design and driver software for the Windows Vista operating system.
