University of New York in Prague: UNYP Celebrates Its Sixth Graduation Ceremony
PRAGUE, Czech Rep.--The University of New York in Prague (UNYP) held its sixth annual graduation ceremony in Palac Zofin on the banks of the Vltava river on Saturday, 23 June, 2007. Bachelor's, Master's and MBA degrees were awarded to nearly 150 students from more than 35 different countries. The graduates received their diplomas as a packed palace of over 700 family members, friends, diplomats, and other distinguished guests looked on with pride and reverence.
Nearly 100 students received Bachelor's degrees from the State University of New York, Empire State College (SUNY) in the U.S. The degrees were awarded in Business Administration, Communication & Mass Media, International & European Economic Studies, and Psychology.
Additionally, some of these students successfully completed their Czech State Exams and will be awarded a Czech "bakalar" degree from UNYP in addition to their American Bachelor's degrees.
Thirteen students received a Master's degree in Professional Communication and PR from La Salle University in the U.S. Fifty-four students received MBA degrees from the Institut Universitaire Kurt Bosch (IUKB) in Switzerland.
The graduation, like UNYP, was a true multicultural event, with an international audience which mirrored its graduates. Czech students made up the majority of the graduates, followed by students from Slovakia. Other graduating students came from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe; from India to Vietnam; from Mexico to Nepal.
The top students from each degree program delivered speeches on behalf of their class. Tomas Kubica, from Slovakia, gave a compelling speech about how he had learned English as a young boy through a postal correspondence with an English gentleman. Kubica graduated with a double degree in International & European Economic Studies and Business Administration. Iva Hausvaterova, from the Czech Republic, praised the La Salle program for the great public relations skills both she and her classmates have acquired, in her honored speech. Hausvaterova received a Master's Degree in Professional Communication and Public Relations from La Salle University in the U.S. She works as an Internal Communications Manager at Microsoft Prague. The honored MBA student, Carol Newton, discussed creating a business vision for the future. Originally from South Africa, Newton works as the Head of Supply Chain Solutions for DHL-Prague.
The honored instructor this year was Bill Cohn, a lawyer from San Francisco and a favorite teacher among many UNYP students. In Cohn's speech, he compared a UNYP classroom to the United Nations. "Actually, having worked at the UN, I can tell you that the classrooms here function much better," added Cohn.
Representatives from UNYP's partner institutions were also on hand to provide advice and praise to the graduates. Dr. Kingston Nyamapfene, Dean of the Center for International Programs at SUNY, Empire State College, discussed many things, such as the need for a "life" curriculum after academic studies have ended. Nyamapfene also awarded the Bachelor's degrees to the students.
Dr. Gerard Molyneaux, F.S.C., Ph.D., director of international relations at La Salle University, conferred the Master's degrees. In his speech to the graduates, he explained how they can apply the sport pep talk given to a team from its coach: "Communicate, scrap, and play."
Dr. Charles Dufault from IUKB discussed the benefits of change in business. He was joined by Dr. Hans von Werra and Professor Claude Varley to confer the MBA degrees.
In his closing remarks, Mr. Elias Foutsis, the president and founder of VS UNYP, reminded students that it is necessary to "acquire and adhere to eternal values such as dignity, honesty, respect, and character traits such as open-mindedness, inquisitiveness, and innovativeness."
