Joint Statement: Indonesian Film Society

We, the Indonesian film society, believe that the Indonesian Film Festival (FFI) should be an indicator of Indonesian film development, a stimulus for creation through awards for achievements in Indonesian film and means of appreciation for Indonesian society.

We also believe that the Indonesian Film Festival should reflect the policy of Indonesian state for film, with an awareness about development of film in Indonesia.

On these grounds we voice our protests:

1. Against organization and juries' decision in 2006 Indonesian Film Festival. This protest is based on the fact that the film "Ekskul" produced by PT Indika Entertainment that has been awarded as the best film, has in our view committed violation of copyright in music illustration. This situation proves deteriorating quality and dubious competence of FFI organization, as well as its publicly unaccountable event and financial organization. It also reflects Ministry of Culture and Tourism's poor performance in facilitating Indonesian Film.

2. Against present institutional system in Indonesian film which is carried out by organizations formed by Ministry of Information such Film Censorship Institution (Lembaga Sensor Film), National Film Deliberation Body (Badan Pertimbangan Perfilman Nasional/BP2N) and its sub organizations. These organizations do not reflect the spirit of change and are not supportive of progress in Indonesian film.
Stagnation in the system is impeding development of Indonesian film which show potentials of progress since the beginning of reformation movement.

We, the Indonesian film society, demand the Department of Culture and Tourism to take these actions:

1. For the sake of Indonesian film, annul 2006 Indonesian Film Festival best film award and other related awards to this film and demand an accountability report on jury decisions from festival organizers to be publicly announced.

2. Temporarily suspend the Indonesian Film Festival.

3. To dismiss present film-related institutions and organizations, to create a new democratic and transparent system of film institutions that corresponds to contemporary developments in Indonesian film and including participation of Indonesian film scene and its individuals.

4. To urge the Indonesian parliament to overrule Law No. 8/1992 on Film and replace it with a new law that supports progress in Indonesian film.

5. To create a strategic policy design to further develop Indonesian film culture and industry, by actively engaging participation of Indonesian film scene.

6. To make fundamental changes in rules and organizations of film censorship by replacing Film Censorship Institution with a Film Classification Institution.

As a sign of our earnestness, we hereby return Citra Awards that we have received from Indonesian Film Festivals 2004-2006.

Should there be no response to our demands above, we will boycott future FFI organization and events and will structurally resist activities organized by government bodies in the name of Indonesian film scene.

This statement is made as a form of our responsibility to the society that has supported our existence and is one of our main reasons to continue working and creating.
