DEQ Releases Record of Decision for Cleanup of Mission Wye State Superfund Facility

Helena—The Montana Department of Environmental Quality released its Record of Decision (ROD) today that outlines the requirements for cleanup of the Mission Wye State Superfund Facility in Livingston, Mont.

The cleanup includes required monitoring of the natural reduction of the chemicals (tetrachloroethylene and trichloroethylene) in soil vapor and groundwater at the facility. The cleanup also includes land and groundwater use controls to prevent exposure to contamination through excavation, construction of buildings and groundwater use. Previous interim cleanup actions reduced contamination to its current level. Long-term monitoring will continue until cleanup is complete, which is expected in four to six years.

DEQ issued its draft cleanup plan in June of 2019 and received public comment. Included in the ROD is a responsiveness summary that addresses the comments received during the comment period.

The ROD is the decision document that selects the final cleanup for the Mission Wye facility. The decision was made under the authority of the Comprehensive Environmental Cleanup and Responsibility Act, also known as the State Superfund law, to ensure protectiveness of human health and the environment.

The ROD will be available for review at the DEQ Waste Management and Remediation Division located at 1225 Cedar St in Helena, Mont., and at the Livingston-Park County Library located at 228 W Callender St. in Livingston, Mont. It will also be temporarily posted online at: http://deq.mt.gov/Public/notices For more information, contact Heather Foslund at: 406-444-6745 or hfoslund@mt.gov
