A.U: PSC discusses solutions to internal displacement of Africans

Addis Ababa, ANGOLA, April 19 - Lasting solutions to the situation of internal displacement in Africa, Humanitarian Action, was debated last Thursday by the Peace and Security Council of the African Union (A.U) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. ,

On the occasion, Angola defended that sustainable solutions to the situation of internal displacement in Africa call for double efforts from the A.U member states towards the finding of inclusive political agreements, aimed at putting an end to conflicts and the “serious and shameful humanitarian  consequences” they cause in the continent.

This statement was made by the Angolan ambassador to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union and the UN Economic Commission for Africa, Francisco da Cruz.

In order for lasting solutions to internal displacement be encountered, the diplomat underscored the importance of the timely and appropriate application, by member states, of the six juridical tools regulating the African Union.

These instruments, he goes on to say, are the Protocol on Prevention and Fight against Terrorism; African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance; Non-Aggression and Common Defence Pact; The Kampala Convention on the protection of internally displaced people; AU Convention on Prevention and Combating Corruption; and the Niamey Convention on Cross-border Co-operation.

“Angola thinks that peace and stability can only sustainable when the political solutions to the challenges we’ve been facing, as nations, are based on the legitimate democratic aspirations of the people (...)”, he emphasised, adding aspects like respect for the institutions and the fundamental law of the states.

According to official data, over one third of displaced people in the world are in the African continent, namely 6.3 million refugees and asylum seekers, plus 15.6 million internally displaced.
