The GC3 Sustainable Chemistry Alliance Applauds Bipartisan, Bicameral Introduction of the Sustainable Chemistry R&D Act

Washington, DC, April 03, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The GC3 Sustainable Chemistry Alliance, a business group that includes chemical producers, product manufacturers and retailers, applauds today’s introduction of the Sustainable Chemistry R&D Act. The Alliance commends US Senators Susan Collins (R-ME), Chris Coons (D-DE) and their cosponsors Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and Shelly Moore Capito (R-WV) along with US Representatives Dan Lipinski (D-IL) and John Moolenaar (R-MI) for their leadership in this important area of US innovation.

“The bipartisan leadership and bicameral introduction demonstrate the broad support for the development and use of more sustainable chemistry,” said Joel Tickner, Executive Director of the Green Chemistry and Commerce Council (GC3) which sponsors the Sustainable Chemistry Alliance. “More sustainable chemicals can offer improved human health profiles, improved environmental profiles, reduced environmental emissions and lower energy consumption. There is significant market demand for more sustainable chemistry and growing global competition to capture this emerging area of chemistry innovation. Effective policy can help ensure US leadership in sustainable chemistry design, development, and commercialization.”

The Sustainable Chemistry R&D Act would establish a coordinating entity within the federal government to accelerate the development of more sustainable chemistry. In addition to extensive private sector efforts, the federal government has significant research and development and investment capacity, including many programs relevant to this area.  The Sustainable Chemistry R&D Act, by coordinating and amplifying these government activities, can make them more efficient and enable faster US progress in sustainable chemistry innovation.

Global competition will be fierce for the development of the sustainable chemistry market, which is projected to exceed $100 billion worldwide by 2022. The Sustainable Chemistry R&D Act offers a clear vision to enable the robust development of sustainable chemistry research, development and manufacturing capacity in the US, with its attendant economic, health, and environmental benefits.

The GC3 Sustainable Chemistry Alliance thanks the congressional champions who made this bill a priority early in the 116th Congress and looks forward to working with members of the Senate and House and other stakeholders in enacting the Sustainable Chemistry R&D Act.
