Mozambique / Idai: Death toll rises to 493

Beira, ANGOLA, March 30 - The number of deaths caused by Cyclone Idai and the floods that followed has risen to 493, the Mozambican authorities announced today. ,

According to the authorities, quoted by the agency Diário de Notícias, the latest report, presented at the Beira city center of relief operations, also points to 1,523 injured and 839,748 people affected by the natural disaster of March 14.

The  representative in Mozambique of the United Nations Fund for the Population (UNFPA), Andrea Wojnar said that , the United Nations estimated on Thursday that 75,000 pregnant women were affected by Hurricane Idai in Mozambique and that 7,000 of the 45,000 expected deliveries in the coming months could register potentially fatal complications.

The warning comes after the UNFPA official visited several infrastructure and communities in the Dondo district in the province of Sofala.
