UN briefed on Angola experience in Great Lakes

Luanda, ANGOLA, March 26 - Angola's experience in finding solutions for the Great Lakes Region was the basis of a meeting between the country's permanent representative to the UN, Maria dos Reis Ferreira, and the UN Secretary General's special envoy, to the Great Lakes region, Huang Xia.,

At the meeting, held in New York, USA, Huang Xia heard the experience of Angola, as a Member State of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR).

In a press release to which Angop had access on Tuesday, the Angolan representation at the UN says that the meeting also served for Huang Xia to receive subsidies that allow him to present concrete proposals to the secretary-general of the world organization, regarding the Great Lakes Region.

During the half an hour audience, the Chinese diplomat underlined the economic and social progress made in Angola after a long period of armed conflict.

According to Huang Xia, the experience of Angola should serve as an inspiration for other countries, despite the economic crisis that is facing at the moment, resulting from the drop of oil price in the international market.

The diplomat added that Angola has political and financial capital to take on other challenges in the Great Lakes Region. He expressed interest in contacting the Angolan authorities in order to boost the Executive Secretariat of ICGLR.

Ambassador Huang Xia was appointed Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for the Great Lakes Region on January 22, 2019, by the organization's Secretary-General, António Guterres.

The Chinese diplomat takes office next April.
