Luanda, ANGOLA, March 23 - The 31st anniversary of the famous "Battle of Cuito Cuanavale", one of the bloodiest military confrontations of the post-independence war, from November 15, 1987 - March 23, 1988, is being commemorated this Saturday.,
The battle involved the former People's Liberation Forces of Angola (Fapla), Cubans, National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (Unita) and South African Army.
From 15 November 1987 to 23 March 1988, units of Buffalo Battalion and the South African Presidential Regiment, along with thousands of Unita soldiers, besieged the village of Cuito Cuanavale in an attempt to capture this locality and create a corridor to Luanda to pave the way for Jonas Savimbi to reach the Angolan presidency.
