Luanda, ANGOLA, February 27 - The boards of five out of the six political parties that make up the Broad Convergence for Angola?s Salvation Electoral Coalition (CASA-CE) announced last Tuesday the removal of Abel Chivukuvuku from the post of president of the coalition.,

ANGOP has learnt that the reason behind such decision has to do with an alleged “breach of trust” in regard to Abel Chivukuvuku.

 

In view of such move, CASA-CE also decided to pick its MP André Mendes de Carvalho to take over the leadership of the coalition.

 

André Mendes de Carvalho, one of the independent members of the coalition and its whip in Parliament, was the vice president of CASA-CE.

 

The leaders of the parties that make up the coalition had given Abel Chivukuvuku 72 hours to submit his resignation from the top position, to which the seasoned politician allegedly responded that he would join a (legalised) political party, without mentioning which one, to be able to possibly run for the presidency of the country as the candidate of that party.

 

The CASA-CE coalition was idealized and formed in 2012 by the former member of the opposition UNITA, Abel Chivukuvuku. It is made up of six parties and a group of independent politicians, among them the founder of the coalition himself.

Last year, the Constitutional Court deliberated that the independent members of the coalition could no longer be part of it, since the grouping (CASA-CE ) is supposed to be a coalition of political parties and not a set of individual politicians.

Following the decision of the Constitutional Court it was expected that the independent members of the coalition would give steps towards forming a political party, but apparently some of the members prefer to affiliate with an already existing legalised political group.

 

According to CASA-CE’s co-ordinator for constitutional and juridical matters, Alexandre Sebastião, speaking recently at a press conference, it was not a measure taken lightly, but a decision had to be made to break an impasse that was lasting for over a year.

 

He also explained that the coalition leadership was not doing away with its independent members, it was only changing its president.      

 

Meanwhile, some of the independent members of the coalition, who are seeking to join the Bloco Democratico (Democratic Bloc) party, have sent a letter to the board of this political organisation - one of the party members of CASA-CE – so that among other aspects they could learn about which position Abel Chivukuvuku would occupy in the Bloco Democratico (B.D) party.

 

Enquired by ANGOP on the veracity of the said document, whose content is available in the social media, MP Lindo Bernardo Tito - also an independent member of the coalition - did not confirm or deny the allegations.

 

The BD party is currently led by the MP Justino Pinto de Andrade, a historical political figure and dissident of the ruling MPLA.
