BERLIN, GERMANY – Today, U.S. Deputy Secretary of Energy Dan Brouillette participated in a German LNG Conference in Berlin, hosted by German Federal Minister of Economic Affairs and Energy Peter Altmaier. The Deputy Secretary and Minister Altmaier were joined by International Energy Agency Executive Director Dr. Fatih Birol, as well as government and industry leaders to discuss the essential role of natural gas in both the U.S. and Germany’s energy futures. U.S. Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell also participated in the day’s events.

Deputy Secretary Brouillette emphasized how America’s natural gas revolution has played an integral role in U.S. energy security, and how it can play an important role in Germany’s as well. Both Brouillette and Altmaier agreed that diversifying Germany’s natural gas supply is critical to maintaining both Germany and the EU’s energy security.

The Deputy Secretary reasserted the United States’ opposition to the Nord Stream II pipeline, as a project that increases Germany’s reliance on the Russian Federation and its use of energy as a tool for political coercion. Both leaders agreed, however, to work together on finding new opportunities for LNG collaboration between the U.S. and Germany.

Minister Altmaier also announced today that the German government will move forward with financing for the construction of two LNG import terminals in Germany. Brouillette remarked the U.S. is encouraged by the progress of these projects as a means to help Germany diversify their energy infrastructure and supply.

In addition to the LNG conference, Deputy Secretary Brouillette held bilateral meetings with German State Secretary for Energy, Andreas Feicht, and Foreign Affairs State Secretary, Walter Lindner, on the importance of LNG and overall U.S.-Germany energy cooperation.
