Fighting corruption tops Head of State press conference
Luanda, ANGOLA, December 21 - The Angolan president, João Lourenço, on Friday in Luanda granted his second press conference to the national and foreign press, in which he reaffirmed the beginning of the coercive repatriation of capital on the 26th December of this year.
,
The Head of State, who answered more than 22 questions, said it was too early to talk about success or failure of the anti-corruption strategy, stressing that this repatriation process has no exact date to finish.
Without disclosing figures, João Lourenço greeted everyone who took advantage of the grace period to voluntarily repatriate the capital wrongly transferred out of the country, but warned that anyone who wants to face the State could lose these resources and be taken to court.
He promised that in due course the National Bank of Angola will publish statistical data on the values illegally transferred and have already been recovered by the State, reaffirming the opening of Portugal to help repatriate capital.
João Lourenço said that the fight against corruption will be continuous and results will be slow, denying that any regime pact is necessary to implement this strategy, to which he invited the participation of every society.
He denied that the MPLA intends to monopolize the implementation of the anti-corruption strategy, emphasizing that no political force is away from this fight.
On the other hand, the President pointed out that the principle of separation of powers between the Government, Legislative and Judicial power was a milestone that was not intended to be violated, reaffirming the wish that its acts of governance be monitored.
The Head of State also said that that the Executive does not alter judgments of the Constitutional Court, but must respect them, according to the principle of the separation of powers.
In this area, he denied that he was protecting former leaders of the country, such as former Vice-President Manuel Vicente, whose criminal case, opened in Portugal and transferred to Angola, should be conducted by judicial authorities.
The President of the Republic clarified that it is not his competence to take measures against entities outside the Executive, and that the question of the withdrawal of immunities to Manuel Vicente, for purposes of judgment in Angola, must be dealt with by justice.
Joao Lourenço also clarified that the Executive is ready to help organize the exhumation of the remains of former UNITA leader Jonas Savimbi, waiting only for that party's decision.
"We are ready to do this at any time. But UNITA seems to be in no hurry, "said João Lourenço, who said, on the other hand, to maintain a normal relationship with the former Head of State, José Eduardo dos Santos.
In the area of cooperation relations, the Head of State announced that a visit to Cuba is under study in the first quarter of 2019, and that the deadlock in negotiations with Holy See for an agreement was already over.
