As Georgia’s leading digital learning content provider, GPB Education engaged Georgia educators to serve as consultants on Georgia Forests: Virtual Learning Journey to ensure that it is aligned to Georgia standards. The project also includes a free teacher toolkit with STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) challenges that encourage inquiry-based learning, problem-solving and critical thinking.
“The Georgia Forestry Foundation is honored to partner with Georgia Public Broadcasting for this unique, one-of-a-kind forestry education tool,” said Andres Villegas, President of the Georgia Forestry Foundation. “Working forests are critical to the daily lives of all Georgians. The Virtual Classroom is a highly-engaging resource that can enhance educators’ ability to teach students about the sustainability and economic importance of Georgia’s most abundant natural resource.”
GPB Education continues to look at innovative ways to bring new learning experiences into the classroom which now includes both Augmented (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR). Using Virtual Reality as a new technology enhances existing educational tools, student engagement, and increases interest and engagement in subject materials.
“Because of great partners like Georgia Forestry Foundation, Georgia Public Broadcasting is able to create innovative digital resources like the Georgia Forests Virtual Learning Journey that are educational and engaging for students across the state,” said Laura Evans, We are excited to be able to offer this resource at no cost and it can be accessed on all platforms used in Georgia classrooms.
The unique project is divided into five topic sections: “What Is A Forest?,” “Working Forests,” “Forestry and Me,” “Faces of Forestry” and “STEAM Challenges.” Through each of the five topics covered, students learn about forest ecosystems, food webs, and life cycles, as well as forestry management processes, career opportunities, and much more.
