Angolan State must secure integrity of detained- jurist

Speaking to Angop, the jurist said the Angolan State can detain a person, however it must keep his dignity by not leaving them in vulnerable situations.
The lawyer said so in the sequence of the arrests of top officials, which have been conducted by the Criminal Investigation Service (SIC).
In the meantime, he added, taking into account that the defendants are public servants, there is the need to use a number of penal norms, such as the Penal Code (general law of crimes) and other legislations with focus to law on administrative probity and money laundering.
Besides embezzlement, whose heaviest sentence is of 12 years, these top officials have also been accused of criminal association, traffic of influence and money laundering.
However, said the jurist, preventive detention does not mean the individual is guilty of the accusations, since they still enjoy the assumption of innocence, taking into account that they have been applied provisory measures, while await the conclusion of the investigations conducted by the prosecution or the holding of trials.
The detentions occurred as part of the combat against corruption, nepotism and impunity, which are top priority of the Angolan government led by the president, João Lourenço.
