Luanda, ANGOLA, September 9 - The 6th MPLA extraordinary congress, held Saturday in Luanda, granted the title of emeritus president of the party to José Eduardo dos Santos.,

In the closing session, the delegates to the conclave also granted to José Eduardo dos Santos the titles of honorary member of the Central Committee and MPLA distinct militant.

The MPLA newly-elected president, João Lourenço, handed over the medals and diplomas corresponding to the titles attributed to José Eduardo dos Santos, as well as the emeritus president cordon.

José Eduardo dos Santos led the MPLA since September 21, 1979.

João Lourenco was elected MPLA president, with 2,309 votes from the delegates to the congress held at the Belas Conference Center, in Luanda, with the participation of 2,448 delegates from the country's 18 provinces.
