SADC set up committee to transform Forum into Parliament

Windhoek, ANGOLA, August 19 - The SADC Heads of State and Government have set up a joint technical commission in Windhoek, Namibia, to follow up on the process of transforming the Parliamentary Forum of the body into the Regional Parliament by January 2019.,

The committee is composed of the SADC Secretariat and the Parliamentary Forum, and is responsible for dealing with and sending to member states the proposal to transform the Forum into a Regional Parliament so that they can provide their contributions by January 2019.

According to the Speaker of the Angolan parliament and the SADC Parliamentary Forum, Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos, most of the leaders of the region agree and support the transformation of the Parliamentary Forum into the SADC Regional Parliament.

Fernando Piedade dos Santos, who expressed optimism about the transformation of this institution into a Regional Parliament, revealed the information to the Angolan press in the Namibian capital at the end of the 38th Summit of Heads of State and Government, from 17 to 18 in Namibia.

This subject dominated the agenda of the SADC Heads of State and Government, and according to Fernando da Piedade dos Santos who presented arguments for this transformation, "the results were positive", although it has not yet been approved.

The SADC Parliamentary Forum was established in 1997 as an autonomous institution of SADC and consists of 14 parliaments from the region. It was created on the occasion of the 17th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Community held in Blantyre, Malawi.
