European Commission opens application procedure for new expert group on patents

The European Commission is setting up a group of experts on the licensing and valuing of standard essential patents (SEPs). It today opened the application procedure for membership.

The group’s aim will be to the Commission with expertise and know-how on fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory (FRAND) licensing terms. The group will also provide advice on how to adequately value intellectual property, including in the context of the digitisation of the economy.

The group will have up to 15 members. It will include independent experts and members representing stakeholder interests.

The Commission announced its intention to create the group in November 2017 in its Communication setting out the EU approach to standard essential patents.

Closure date for applications: 20 August 2018.
