Of course certain standards must be met, but in today's world where the facts are at our fingertips, learning should be about the discovery of knowledge to make learning meaningful. The teacher of the future guides learning, teaching students to work together, communicate effectively, disagree respectfully, and take what they’ve learned and apply it to the real world.

Mia Pumo is the co-founder of Constructive Learning Design, an educational consultancy dedicated to supporting and training instructional leaders in education.

“As a teacher, you can't just close your door anymore and do your thing,” says Pumo. We're much stronger when we work as a team. We know how important the school environment is for teachers as well as students. We want to make those environments even more positive and more collaborative.”

Constructive Learning Design helps create cultures of continuous improvement. Both Pumo and her partner Jay Korreck are former educators as well as instructional coaches. They also train and support new teachers.

“I do believe people have to be kind of called to that work,” says Pumo. “My first year was very emotional because of the stories kids told me about their home lives. What made it a positive experience for me was the supportive community that I had at the school. We all shared a vision for our students, and because of that shared vision, we were able to work together to help all of our students. That's what led me to the work I'm doing today, helping educators create those types of environments.

“This is about having a partner in your professional world, somebody that you can confide in, somebody that you can take risks with, and somebody to support you as you grow,” says Pumo. “And it trickles down to the students, which is a beautiful thing. Everything we do with teachers is a strategy or technique that they can use with their students to guide learning.”

According to Pumo, the current educational policy of teaching to the test is misguided and limiting. It takes a strong person with a clear vision to lead a community like that where teachers can take risks and be creative. To expect every child to learn the same thing at the same pace is not a realistic expectation.

“My favorite quote is from Einstein: ‘If you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will spend its entire life believing it is stupid.’ Students are the same way. If you focus on the process of learning, you can make the classroom experience much richer for teachers and students,” says Pumo. “We must allow our students to bring their creativity to learning and educators to bring their creativity to teaching. I think those two things are really missing in a lot of classrooms in America today.”
