AU learns of Angola's corruption fight project

Nouakchott, ANGOLA, July 3 - Foreign Affairs minister, Manuel Augusto, reported to the African Union (AU) delegates the programme to combat corruption adopted by the Angolan government led by President João Lourenço.,

The Angolan diplomat, who was addressing the 31st AU Summit, held on July 1-2 in Nouakchott (Mauritania), in representation of the Head of State, said the Angolan government took up the challenge to fight against corruption, pointing out impunity as one of the main causes of this evil.

According to Manuel Augusto, the combat against corruption and the practices that hurt the public interest constitute the core of the speech of the Angolan President since he took up the helm of the country in 2017 and he has prioritized the combat against this phenomenon during his term.

“In the framework of the combat against acts of corruption, Angola approved several legal instruments that criminalize and sanction corruptive practices and regulate mainly situations involving political officials and public employees”, underlined the diplomat.

However, the Angolan top diplomat considered corruption a phenomenon that hinders the development of the African continent and does not help to reduce poverty, but stimulates illegal migration.

“Corruption withdraws from the governments the capacity to meet the needs of the people, disregards the preference of the majority of the citizens in favour of a minority and blocks the mechanism of control and transparency on illegal financial flow”, said the Angolan diplomat.

Besides these aspects, said the diplomat, corruption enables irregular money transfers, tax evasion, overcharging and many other ways used by companies to prevent Africa from taking advantage of its resources.
