MPLA approves João Lourenço candidacy for party leader
Luanda, ANGOLA, June 29 - Angola's ruling MPLA party's Central Committee (CC) approved Friday in Luanda the candidacy of João Lourenço for the party's president, taking over from José Eduardo dos Santos.

The election is due on September 8 this year during the Extraordinary Congress of this political organisation.
The information is contained in a final communiqué from the third Extraordinary Session of the party's Central Committee, held Friday (29th) in Luanda, under its leader José Eduardo dos Santos.
The body also approved the general methodology for the preparation and holding of the Congress.
The participants also gave green light to the proposal for composition of national preparatory commission, the draft regiment, the proposal for the composition of the internal organs and the rules of procedures of the event.
The Central Committee welcomed the President José Eduardo dos Santos for the way he guided the party and the country over the last thirty-nine years, with stress to the achievement of peace and national reconciliation and political transition processes in Angola.
The participants also reiterated their support for the Government, under João Lourenço.
They encouraged the head of Executive to continue with the effort focused on country's growth, development and progress with a view to improving the people's living standards.
The Central Committee also approved the National Development Programme (PDN), which outlines the development strategy for 2018-2022, and encouraged the Executive to implement it for the progress and well-being of Angolans.
The ruling MPLA party also congratulated the children in the world on 1 June (International Child's Day) and 16 June (African Children's Day), calling on the Executive to make efforts to protect their rights.
Congratulations were also extended to FRELIMO party and the people of Mozambique on celebration of the 43rd anniversary of National Independence on 25 June and their achievements.
The Committee welcomed the 43rd session of the Plenary Assembly of SADC Parliamentary Forum taking place in Angola, having welcomed SADC efforts to transform the Parliamentary Forum into a Regional Parliament.
MPLA expressed support for Angola's position on the Revision and Reorientation of the Regional Indicative Strategic Development Plan (RISDP), complemented by the SADC Long-term Industrialisation Strategy.
The Central Committee strongly condemned the assassination attempt against President of Zimbabwe Emerson Mnangângua, and the Prime Minister of Ethiopia Abiy Ahmed.
The VI Extraordinary Congress will take place under the motto "MPLA with the strength of the past and the present, let's build a better future".
The Congress will include, among other matters, the election of the party's president, strengthening unity and cohesion, as well as the MPLA's leadership role.
