Impasse in transforming SADC- FP into Parliament - Angolan MP

Luanda, ANGOLA, June 25 - The impasse in the transformation of the SADC Parliamentary Forum into a regional parliament is due to the fear of losing sovereignty by some of the countries that make up the regional organization, said the Angolan MP and spokesperson for the 43rd Plenary Assembly of the SADC Forum Parliamentary, Josefina Pitra Diakité.,

The official who was speaking to thepress in the framework of the forum that starts this Monday in Luanda, reported that some countries feared that the Regional Parliament would collide with the sovereignty of the National Parliaments and of the countries.

Among the parliaments of the countries that favor the elevation of the Forum into a Parliament, of the 14 that make up the platform, Diakité highlighted Angola, South Africa, Namibia, Eswatini (former Swaziland), Botswana and Mozambique.

At the Sunday meeting, the SADC- FP executive committee, which prepared the whole dossier to be discussed during the 43rd plenary assembly, discussed aspects related to the transformation of the forum into SADC parliament, industrialization and effective integration, restructuring of the Forum secretariat, among others subjects.

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) Parliamentary Forum is an autonomous institution, established in 1997 and consists of 14 parliaments from the region, namely Angola, South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Madagascar, Malawi, Republic Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Botswana, Lesotho, Mauritius, Mozambique, eSwatini (former Swaziland), Zambia, Seychelles.
