ANDY WARHOL: COWBOYS AND INDIANS BRINGS POP TO SAN ANTONIO’S BRISCOE WESTERN ART MUSEUM THIS SUMMER
Groundbreaking Works by the Father of American Pop Art, Andy Warhol; and the Originator of the Western Pop Movement, Billy Schenck, are Featured in Companion Exhibitions at The Briscoe Western Art Museum
San Antonio, Texas, June 18, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Briscoe Western Art Museum is pleased to present Andy Warhol: Cowboys and Indians, featuring works by the legendary artist that portray iconic Western images, and the companion exhibition, Billy Schenck: Myth of the West, by the contemporary artist who founded the Western Pop movement. Both shows run through September 3, 2018 and are included with museum admission.

Andy Warhol is the undisputed leader of American Pop Art. The Cowboys and Indians series, Warhol’s last major project before passing in 1987, pays tribute to the archetypal symbols of a popular, romanticized version of the American West. This portfolio of 10 prints includes the likes of famous Western stars and symbols such as Geronimo, John Wayne, Annie Oakley and Teddy Roosevelt. The Briscoe’s Andy Warhol: Cowboys and Indians features the full portfolio plus four additional trial prints offering a time-capsule of American media culture in the 1980s.
“The Briscoe’s highly anticipated Warhol exhibit gives us a unique insight into this influential artist and his fascination with the American West,” said Michael Duchemin, President & CEO of the Briscoe Western Art Museum. “Combined with our companion exhibition by contemporary Western Pop artist Billy Schenck, we are able to draw in an entire new audience and challenge the traditional concept of what constitutes Western art.”
Coinciding with Warhol’s Cowboys and Indians is the Myth of the West exhibit featuring the works of Billy Schenck, one of the original founders of Western Pop Art. Inspired by artists such as Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, Schenck’s artwork is known for utilizing cinematic imagery reproduced in a flattened, reductivist style where colors are displayed side-by-side rather than blended or shadowed. Myth of the West is a complete retrospective of the artist’s work and showcases 26 pieces in his distinctive style.
