Speech: Commissioner Malmström on prosperity, principles, and the relationship between Ukraine and the EU
Ukraine | Brussels, 5 June 2018
This morning Commissioner Cecilia Malmström spoke at a roundtable event attended by First Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine and Minister of Economic Development and Trade Stepan Kubiv, organised by SME Europe and several partners.
She discussed the unique relationship between the EU and Ukraine, and how it goes beyond simply cooperation. The EU-Ukraine Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area is the most exhaustive that either the EU or Ukraine has ever been involved in. It is an economic asset, a tool of reform and a vehicle for building trust – between the EU and Ukraine, as well as with citizens.
“Obstacles to trade are not always classical trade barriers. They can be a lack of trust, transparency and fairness. By building confidence in rule of law and fighting corruption Ukraine can not only attract foreign direct investment, but also help local business flourish in a good business environment”, Commissioner Malmström said.
