Official calls for combined effort to fight cross-border crime

Luanda, ANGOLA, May 31 - Angola’s minister of Interior Ângelo Tavares Thursday in Luanda asked the Southern African Regional Police Chiefs Co-operation Organisation (SARPCCO) to combine efforts toward prevention and fight against cross-border evils. ,

 

The official was speaking of the prevention and combat drugs and human trafficking as well as car theft, money laundering and cyber crime, stressing that such evils affect the economy and social development of the region.

 

Ângelo Tavares was addressing an opening session of the 23rd Annual Meeting of  SARPCCO Police Commanders Subcommittee of SADC Inter-State Defence and Security Committee, on behalf of the President of Republic João Lourenço.

 

In addition to affecting the economic and social growth and development of SADC region, such crimes discourage foreign investment and create a sense of instability, he noted.

 

However, he added, combining efforts to prevent it should be a priority among member countries.

 

The official spoke of the need for greater cooperation and coordination of actions among members of SADC police (SARPCCO), Interpool and other related organizations.

 

According to him, greater cooperation will help prevent international organised crime.

The minister warned that criminal actions will never be restricted to the dynamics dictated by conventional borders, regardless of the degree of development of each country.

 

In recent times, he stressed, people and organisations involved in organised crime, such as trafficking in organs and human beings and terrorism, have negatively exploited the progress of science in the field of new information and communication technologies.

 

Decrying the negative impact of the crime, the minister said that these people and organisations tend to promote corruption, money laundering, drug trafficking, war and lethal material, child pornography, among other evils.

 

"Our countries should not protect those who, to the detriment of their own countries and peoples, create fortunes through corruption and money laundering. It is necessary to prevent them from amassing these fortunes in our countries ," stressed the minister.

 

According to him, the  Defence and Security bodies, in particular the police forces within SARPPCO, should intensify the staff training.

 

He said that the use of technologies will help the staff put into place the plans and programmes of the regional organisation.

 

In turn, Interpool Secretary-General Yurgan Stock reiterated the organ's availability to to increasingly train the organisation's offices in Africa.

 

He spoke of strengthening policing networks and prevent criminals from carrying out their criminal actions.

 

SARPCCO is an organ of the Inter-State Committee for Defence and Security of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) tasked with promoting, strengthening and perpetuating cooperation and encourage joint strategies for the management of all forms of cross-border crime.
