Degradation of Cuito prison endangers prisoners' rights - deputy ombud

Cuito, ANGOLA, April 29 - The Cuito prison in central Bié Province is degraded and overcrowded, subjecting inmates to poor accommodation conditions, said Friday in Cuito City the Deputy Ombudsperson, Florbela de Jesus Araújo. ,

Speaking to ANGOP, during her visit to Cuito City, she said that the rights of prisoners are not safeguarded in this correctional centre.

The situation, according to the source, will merit a thorough analysis with the Ombudsman.

To remedy the situation, the Deputy Ombudsperson called for the availability of funds for the completion of the new Cuquema prison for the transfer of the inmates.

The said prison was built to host about 250 inmates, but currently it hosts 892 prisoners, between convicted and detained ones.

However, due to this problem, a new prison in Cuquema, 18 kilometers south-west of Cuito, has been under construction since 2014 to host 1500 inmates.
