Attorney-General appeals for tougher stance against more harmful crimes

Luanda, ANGOLA, April 27 - The Angolan authorities want the justice system to be more efficient and tougher when it comes to dealing with those crimes that cause greater harm to the interests of the country’s development and society in general, said last Thursday, in Luanda, the Attorney-General, Hélder Pitta Gróz. ,

The top prosecutor made this pronouncement when delivering a speech at the opening of the second meeting of the SADC Anti-Corruption Sub-Committee, happening in Luanda.

On his intervention, he emphasised that the Angolan government has taken up the challenge to seriously tackle corruption and impunity.

Thus, he said, it is a thorny task, but “it is not bigger than the will to go forward, grow and prosper”.

In this ambit, he exemplified, several legal instruments have recently been approved which curb corruption practices like money laundering, besides other such tools that are on the pipeline, such as the Draft Penal Code.

The Attorney-General further explained that the fight against corruption will not be won if there is no education about the ideas contained in the laws.

Thus, he called on state organs to collaborate more with the Attorney-General Department, mainly the ministries of Education, Justice, Home Affairs and Mass Media, as well as the civil society institutions.

Hélder Pitta Gróz said he hopes that the gathering can provide strategies and methods for combined actions among states in preventing corruption.

The SADC Anti-Corruption Sub-Committee was created in July 2016, having held its first meeting in Tanzania, in June 2017.

The Luanda meeting – being attended by the representatives of Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Tanzania, Namibia and Malawi – ended on Thursday.
