Opioid Statistics Continues to Grow According To The Recover

SAN DIEGO, April 11, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Recover, a drug news outlet states that the opioid addiction and abuse has become a full-blown epidemic with devastating consequences on the health and well-being of individuals worldwide. Opioid epidemic statistics provided by the National Institute on Drug Abuse shows just how vast the impact of this problem is.

The US is among the largest consumers of opiates. It represents 81% of the Percocet market and almost 100% of the Vicodin market. In 2010, prescription opioids represented 82.8% of the deaths caused by accidental overdose. Opioid overdoses in the Midwestern region increased 70% from July 2016 to September 2017. Incidents of opioid overdose also increased 30% in 52 areas in 45 US states.

The opioid epidemic is a public health crisis that requires serious attention. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is now working on improving access to recovery and treatment service and providing support for radical research on addiction and pain. HHS aims to improve better practices for managing pain, promote consumption of overdose-reversing drugs and reinforce understanding of the crisis through better public health monitoring.

The National Institutes of Health, the leading medical research institution in the US, is also working on finding better ways to treat opioid use disorders, manage pain and prevent opioid misuse. NIH met with academic research centers and pharmaceutical companies to discuss matters that may help solve the opioid epidemic. The discussion included effective and non-addictive ways to manage chronic pain and improved reversal interventions and overdose prevention to support recovery and save lives. They also talked about new technologies and medications to treat disorders associated with opioid use.

Getting Drug Addiction Help

Addiction help is available to individuals who want to stop their dependence on drugs or are facing a relapse. One study reported that almost 91% of those in the recovery stage will experience a relapse. The same study discovered that at least 80% of those who used opiates would relapse within a month after completing a detox program and 59% of those who experienced a relapse would do so in the first week of sobriety.

It is not uncommon for individuals to relapse at least once. A relapse is a normal part of the recovery process and can help one determine their triggers as well as learn techniques they didn’t know before. People who relapse experience negative feelings and thoughts that can reinforce old patterns of substance abuse behaviors. Re-engaging with a proper treatment program can help them learn something new about their addiction and themselves, which will improve their ability to remain sober and clean. A person can return to a treatment center multiple times before enjoying permanent recovery.

Individuals who have relapsed don’t have to deal with everything alone. They can contact a sponsor, friend, family member or therapist who can provide reassurance that they are loved and cared for as well as help them avoid situations that may trigger drug use. They can seek further treatment and find a treatment program that will give them the ongoing encouragement, support, accountability and awareness they need to avoid a future relapse.

Some treatment providers or groups offer programs that people can attend weekly to remind them of their strengths and their reason for remaining sober as well as how to stay firm in their decision to live a clean life. These groups can help them avoid feeling depressed and alone, which can lead to an opiate relapse. Some of the most common treatment approaches include cognitive/behavior therapy, motivational interviewing, anger management, contingency management, dialectical behavior therapy and relapse prevention. The treatment center will determine the right treatment approach for the patient and monitor their progress throughout treatment.
