Lesotho: SADC calls on military to maintain peace and stability

Maseru, ANGOLA, April 11 - Brigadier Sabino Dunguionga Saara, commander of the Southern Africa Development Community Prevention Mission (SAPMIL) Lesotho, urged the Lesotho Armed Forces to maintain peace and stability in the country with a view to guarantee harmony.,

Brigadier Sabino Saara was speaking in Maseru at a seminar organized by SAPMIL last Monday for the Lesotho Defense Force (LDF).

At the time, the senior officer of the Angolan Armed Forces (FAA) in the service of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) urged Lesotho's military to defend the territorial integrity of their country and help the government to achieve national development goals.

He recalled that a healthy relationship between civilian and military leaders is vital for the maintenance of the State and the Nation. "A genuine mutual trust between civilian, military and people is the essence necessary to make the relationship more viable, credible and lasting," he said.

The seminar was opened by Maj. Gen. Matela Matobakele, on behalf of the LDF Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General Mojalefa Letsoela, and lasts for three weeks under SAPMIL's mandate.

As of the 26th April  the event addresses issues such as civilian-military cooperation, the role of the military in a democratic society, the relationship between the military and the media, government and other sectors of society.

The Kingdom of Lesotho is part of SADC and is experiencing a political crisis aggravated by the murder of two heads of its armed forces in 2015 and 2017, which prompted authorities to call for community intervention.

A total of 269 troops, including military, police, intelligence and civilians, have been deployed in the country since last December.

The mission is led by Angola, under the rotating presidency of the SADC Political, Defense and Security body.
