Malanje: Vice president slams anti-governor protests
Luanda, ANGOLA, April 5 - Vice President of Republic Bornito de Sousa Thursday in Luanda lashed out at the stoning acts coupled with the insults to the authorities by citizens who demanded Wednesday the provincial governor of Malanje province to leave the position.
,
Bornito de Sousa said that such behaviour does not reflect the sentiment of the local people.
Taking advantage of the presence of Vice President in Malanje, to chair the central ceremony of the 16th anniversary of peace and national reconciliation, on Wednesday, several people stoned vehicles and demanded the sacking of Governor Norberto do Santos, whom they accuse of practice of nepotism, embezzlement and incompetence.
Speaking to National Radio of Angola, Bornito de Sousa said that preliminary and non-definitive information attributed such acts to a group of motorcycle taxi drivers, commonly known as "kupapatas".
The demonstrators are alleged to be unhappy at the measures taken by the governor meant to reduce the number of accidents that caused an average of seven to nine deaths on daily basis.
The Vice-President said that he was aware that the activity ensure the livelihoods of many young people, but their behaviour did not reflect the sentiment and character of Malanje people, who "are participatory, peaceful, patriotic and have endured sacrifices during the war and wants to see the development of the province and the country. "
The National Police dispersed the young people who tried to carry out the demonstration against the governor of Malanje.
In 2016 the provincial government banned the motorcycle taxi drivers from circulating in town centre due to the high accident rate, after a Provincial Consultation and Social Council Meeting.
Unregistered motorcycle drivers and without helmet are also banned.
