Rising damages from droughts, floods, heat waves, forest fires, extreme storms, and changing patterns of insect-borne diseases such as Dengue and Zika are just some of the dangers of long-term climate change. It’s time that America commit to safe renewable energy sources that can protect us from climate hazards while reducing our vulnerability to imported oil. And communities must be able to trust that their water systems are not poisoning them, and that pollutants are not causing disease, lowering farm productivity, and threatening other species. Care of God’s Creation
In the beginning God created and then entrusted humans as stewards of creation. Scripture is full of imagery of God’s hand at work in creating and humans as caretakers of all God has created. Air and water are basic necessities of life. Water and breathe feature prominently in Christian Scripture and in our language of theology and liturgy.
Sustainable life on our planet is an issue of science, morality, and spirituality. We must care for all of creation to sustain life and honor God. it is a moral imperative that people of faith continue to advocate for care of creation and sustainable environmental practices. The following are two wonderful prayers from the Book of Common Prayer calling our attention to our responsibility to care for God’s creation.
Almighty and everlasting God, you made the universe with
all its marvelous order, its atoms, worlds, and galaxies, and
the infinite complexity of living creatures: Grant that, as we
probe the mysteries of your creation, we may come to know
you more truly, and more surely fulfill our role in your
eternal purpose; in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Almighty God, in giving us dominion over things on earth,
you made us fellow workers in your creation: Give us wisdom
and reverence so to use the resources of nature, that no one
may suffer from our abuse of them, and that generations yet
to come may continue to praise you for your bounty; through
Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
