INDIANAPOLIS, IN, US, March 1, 2018 /EINPresswire.com/ -- The Rev. Jay Lawlor delivered a sermon titled “Come and See” for the 2nd Sunday After the of Epiphany, Year B, January 14, 2018 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church – Richmond, IN. The Gospel reading was John 1:43-51.

Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found him about whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus son of Joseph from Nazareth.” Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.” (John 1:45-46 NRSV)

Come and see is one of my favorite phrases from Scripture because it is a simple invitation which can be profoundly transformative. It is an invitation to come and see who this Jesus is and how he wants to change the world – how he wants to invite us into his movement to change the world. Come and see how Jesus wants to bring God’s loving, liberating, life-giving wholeness to a fractured world. Come and see how Jesus wants to turn the world on its head by lifting up the lowly and casting the mighty from their thrones. Come and see how Jesus wants to bring justice and peace to a world trapped in oppression and violence. Come and see.

It is an invitation perfect for the season after the Epiphany of our Lord – the revelation of God Incarnate (God with us) in Jesus. That’s the big Epiphany, with a capital “E”. But there are many epiphanies which give power to the Jesus movement. An epiphany is about something significant being revealed to us, becoming known to us.

In the gospel reading this morning we have John’s version of calling of disciples. Next week we will have Mark’s version of calling of disciples. With Philip saying to Nathanael “come and see” we have a second invitation to follow Jesus in John’s gospel, and two more of Jesus’ disciples are recruited. Passages in John which come before our Lectionary selection include Simon’s recruitment to follow Jesus from his brother Andrew. [...]
