Students are available to comment in the lead-up to, and immediately following, the release of the 2017 Federal Budget.
Ottawa, Feb. 27, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Canadian Federation of Students is looking for meaningful changes to reduce the up-front cost of pursuing a skilled trade or attending college or university and action to address mounting student debt. The Federation is also looking to see the following:

- The dedication of Federal funding to the Post-Secondary Student Support Program (PSSSP) to honour the treaty right of Indigenous communities
- The full implementation of the recommendations put forth by the Advisory Panel for the Review of Federal Support for Fundamental Science, including an investment in basic, investigator-led research
- $10 million from the funding allocated to the Aboriginal Languages Initiative to support the development of learning materials and language courses at the post-secondary level
THE FACTS:
- An estimated 10,000 Indigenous learners are awaiting funding to pursue an education, despite this being their treaty right
- Total public student debt in Canada has surpassed $28 billion
- From 2001 to 2016, tuition fee revenues tripled in the university sector and more than double at community colleges
- Corporate subsidization of research undermines basic research and long-term innovation, preventing Canada from remaining competitive in the global market
