Stuck in Ice Since December 24 American Marines Come to the Aid of Welcome Hall Mission
MONTREAL, Feb. 23, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- It is not a surprise that the intense cold that we have experienced in Montreal this winter has been particularly difficult for the homeless and the less fortunate. But this extreme temperature has also made some unusual victims. Indeed, the USS Little Rock, an American warship, is stuck in the Port of Montreal because of the early formation of ice on the St. Lawrence Seaway. Originally aiming to reach Florida through Halifax, the USS Little Rock is stopped in Montreal until the end of March. Seeing this situation, the crew has decided to roll up their sleeves and offered to do volunteer work at Welcome Hall Mission, contributing to the well-being of those living in precarious conditions. They will come to sort food and serve customers at the Marché Bon Accueil.

“We are very happy to welcome these Marines who have decided to turn a troublesome situation into a great deed. Their valuable help will be much appreciated,” said Sam Watts, president and CEO of Welcome Hall Mission. To help Montrealers in need, the organization needs to count on 96,042 volunteer hours annually to operate their multiple services.
