Ethiopia: President reiterates engagement with AU

Addis Ababa, ANGOLA, January 28 - Angolan President João Lourenço reaffirmed Angola's engagement with the African Union (AU) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and reaffirmed the readiness of the Angolans to contribute to making this continental body more efficient.,

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 30th Ordinary Session of the AU Summit of Heads of State and Government, he promised to work, within his means, for the African Union to be an institution in which all African Peoples are recognized.

To that end, João Lourenço said that it is necessary to equip the AU with the necessary resources, and that the political will of each member state was decisive.

According to the Head of State, Angola was one of the last colonies in Africa to become independent. Angola is well aware of the meaning and value of African Solidarity, expressed, among other channels, through this Continental Organization.

He mentioned the issue of conflicts, poverty and other endogenous and exogenous factors that impact the development and prevent African peoples from enjoying the abundant wealth in their subsoil.

For him, Africa has already taken significant steps to change this picture, although traces remain, stressing that this was possible because Africans became aware of the responsibilities as a continent, of the need to define their own priorities and to speak with one voice.

However, the president said that it is necessary to change the picture and the way the world see the African continent today, hence suggesting the reinforcement of the collective action of Africans.

In his view, such efforts must be adapted to the requirements of the current international situation, including within the framework of partnerships established with the rest of the world.

This situation, he said, requires of all Africans a sense of mission, praising the values ??of solidarity that guided the action of the founding countries of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), now the African Union.

Angolan President  has encouraged the African leaders to set new momentum and to introduce innovative methods for concrete actions because they have the primary responsibility of transforming the continent and correcting the African paradox.

He emphasized that this paradox has to do with the fact that Africa remains, inexplicably and intolerably, as a continent rich in natural resources, but poverty-stricken.

"I am convinced that Your Excellencies share the sentiment I am expressing here," concluded João Lourenço.
