President returns home from Brazzaville tripartite summit on DRC
Luanda, ANGOLA, December 10 - The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, returned late Saturday afternoon to Luanda, after having paid a few hours' visit to the Republic of Congo, where he participated in a tripartite summit to discuss peace issue in DRC.,
To welcome the Angolan Head of State were the Vice President of the Republic, Bornito de Sousa, the Parliament speaker, Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos, and the chief judge of Constitutional Court, Manuel Aragão, the governor of Luanda, Adriano Mendes de Carvalho, members of the government among other individuals.
In Brazzaville, João Lourenço met with his counterparts of Congo, Dinis Sassou Nguesso, and DR Congo, Joseph Kabila, keeping in mind the situation prevailing in DRC, at a time of intense internal and external pressure on Joseph Kabila, to organize elections leading to a peaceful transition of power.
From the political point of view, the country's internal situation is characterized by pockets of military instability, led by residual armed groups, mainly in the east of the country, and by protests by the opposition and civil society.
A compromise between the main political actors led the Independent National Electoral Commission to announce a new electoral calendar, which finally establishes the election of the President of the Republic set for 23 December 2018.
The UN Security Council immediately approved this compromise, but warned against any further postponement, as well as threatened to act against "all Congolese actors whose actions and statements may hinder ... the holding of the elections."
The meeting is part of the efforts to ensure peace, stability and cooperation in DR Congo and the Great Lakes region, with the involvement of neighboring countries, regional organizations and the United Nations.
During the working visit, President João Lourenço met with his counterpart of Congo, Denis Sassou Nguesso, with whom he analyzed the state of bilateral cooperation.
On the mission, a government delegation led by Foreign Minister Manuel Augusto accompanied the President of the Republic to strengthen ties of friendship, analysis and review of some common projects and to safeguard good neighborly relations between the two bordering States.
At present the cooperation is focused on the Oil, Agriculture, Justice, Fisheries, Culture, Defense, Telecommunications and Finance sectors.
The two Republics have had close ties of friendship and cooperation in force since the earliest days of Angola's independence on 11 November 1975, as well as at regional and international level, both of which are part of the International Conference for the Great Lakes Region ), the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), the African Union (AU) and others.
This is the third official visit by President João Lourenço in the last 15 days, after having been in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, for the 5th African - Union European Summit, and in South Africa on a State visit.
