First Angolan chief of general staff dies in Spain

Luanda, ANGOLA, November 4 - The first and chief of the General Staff of the Angolan Armed Forces (FAA), General João de Matos, died on Saturday, 4 November, by disease, in the city of Madrid, Spain, at the age of 62. ,

This was confirmed on Saturday on a communiqué released to the press by the Politburo of the ruling MPLA party, which highlights, the qualities of Joao Matos as a fighter in the struggle for peace in Angola.

 

 “It was with grief and sorrow that the MPLA Politburo learnt of Joao Baptista de Matos’ death, a prominent fighter of the struggle for peace in Angola and former chief of the General Staff of the Angolan Armed Forces, on Saturday in Spain, by disease”, reads the note.

 

The MPLA recalls Joao de Matos as an intrepid political-military commander who was able to interpret and apply in practice the noblest yearnings of the Angolan people in their revolutionary struggle for the conquest and preservation of national independence, the territorial integrity of Angola and peace, having therefore gained great prestige in the country and abroad.

 

The MPLA's Politburo bows to the memory of this dedicated patriot and, on behalf of the militants, supporters and friends of the party, addresses the bereaved family, the Ministry of National Defense and the FAA, its deepest condolences.
