Head of State opens Monday parliamentary year

Luanda, ANGOLA, October 15 - The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, Monday in Luanda, addresses a message to the country on the State of the Nation, in the framework of the solemn opening session of the 1st Legislative Session of the IV Legislature of the National Assembly (Parliamentary Year 2017 / 2018). ,

 

João Lourenço, who was sworn in as Angolan Head of State on September 26 of this year, thus addresses his first message to the Nation, in light of Article 118 of the Angolan Constitution (2010).

The message to the Nation, a constitutional imperative, should mark the opening of each parliamentary year, addressing the policies advocated for solving the main issues, promoting the well-being of Angolans and the country's development.

According to the program of the activity, which Angop had access to, after his arrival, in the House of Laws, the President of the Republic will be received with military honors, followed by the reception and presentation of greetings by the speaker of the National Assembly , Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos.

The solemn session, which will be attended by distinguished guests, will also be marked by the intervention of the speaker of the National Assembly, Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos, who will also deliver the final words of the meeting.

The Parliament of the Republic of Angola is a body of sovereignty, of unicameral legislature. Under the terms of the Constitution, it represents the people and is invested with the legislative power of the state.

The Parliament is composed of 220 Members, 130 of which are elected by proportional representation and 90 by provincial constituencies. MPs are elected every five years.

Under the National Assembly's Rules of Procedure, the Legislature comprises five legislative sessions or parliamentary years, each cycle starting on 15 October and ending on 15 August of the following year.

In the framework of the general elections of 2017, the IV Legislature of the National Assembly counts on 150 deputies of the MPLA, 51 of UNITA, 16 of the CASA-CE coalition, two of the PRS and one of the FNLA.
