The power of trade, empowering women

Policy | Brussels, 20 June 2017

European Commissioner for Trade Cecilia Malmström today addressed the International Forum on Women and Trade, a Brussels event co-hosted by the European Commission and the International Trade Centre.

To an audience of policymakers, the business community and civil society organisations, the Commissioner stressed the need to fill the “trade gap in gender”, noting that “each woman who can benefit from trade is a woman who can open new markets and new opportunities”.

The Commissioner set out a number of areas in which EU trade policy might be relevant, including the EU’s bilateral trade agreements; its work with the World Trade Organization; development policy and “aid for trade”’; and through better data, with the launch of a first quantitative assessment on how EU exports support jobs for women across Europe.
