BCG’s Grant Freeland Named One of the Year’s Top Consultants

Boston-Based Senior Partner and Global Leader of the Firm’s People & Organization Practice Is Honored by Consulting Magazine for Leadership

BOSTON, June 16, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Grant Freeland, global leader of The Boston Consulting Group’s People & Organization practice and a Boston-based senior partner, was honored last night at a gala dinner in New York recognizing Consulting magazine’s “Top 25 Consultants” of 2017. Freeland won in the category of “Excellence in Leadership.”

In announcing the winners, Joe Kornik, editor and publisher of Consulting, the industry’s leading trade publication, said: “We were simply blown away by the [close to 500] nominations we received. The Top 25 Consultants are a distinguished group, for sure. Through their extraordinary efforts, they make themselves, their firms, their clients, and the entire consulting profession proud.”

As a nearly 30-year veteran of BCG and head of its People & Organization practice, Freeland has led client engagements across a broad range of industries, including biopharma, public sector, industrial products, information services, consumer goods, financial services, and retail. He has several areas of expertise, including corporate transformations, postmerger integration, organization design, leadership and talent, change management, corporate-function improvements, high-performance cultures and work force, and HR enhancement.

In the past year, for example, he has worked on a large postmerger integration of two international companies, helping ensure that they address culture as rigorously as they hit the cost synergies. “I’ve made sure that when teams are launched, they focus as much on how effectively they work together as on how they map out operational timelines,” he said “I know they will achieve the cost targets, but it’s critical that they build a sustainable organization.”

In a profile of Freeland in the magazine’s May 2017 issue, Consulting noted that “while helping clients improve is his passion, Freeland says his career highlight has been substantially improving the work/life balance of BCG consultants around the world. The program he and his team pioneered is called PTO (Predictability, Teaming and Open Communication).”

When Consulting asked him what he enjoys most about his job and the profession, Freeland replied: “There’s always something new and exciting in our line of work. For example, the ways that organizations are now working is fundamentally differently than it was even five years ago. The use of agile in org design and processes has caught on; data analytics is now core to working with people; and technology is truly transforming how we operate, to name just a few trends. How cool is it to be able to explore these things and then help companies gain advantage from doing them better than their competitors!”

Last night’s awards gala was held at the Mandarin Oriental hotel in midtown Manhattan. Coverage of the dinner will appear in the July issue of Consulting, which is published by ALM.
