BC Quake Offers Breakdown of the Yukon Tremor

New blog from Vancouver earthquake kit company looks at takeaway lessons from Yukon earthquake

/EINPresswire.com/ -- VANCOUVER, BC--(Marketwired - May 17, 2017) - As a Vancouver earthquake kit and preparedness company, the team at BC Quake understands that dealing with natural disasters can be a terrifying prospect. However, having the right supplies on hand can increase the chances of survival and rescue in a worst case scenario. To help people understand what happens during an earthquake, the company published a blog about what was learned from the recent Yukon tremor. The Yukon Quake occurred on May 1st, 2017, at approximately 5:30am. With a 6.2 magnitude, it rattled residents on the border between Yukon and British Columbia. While no one was injured, the quake rocked houses and damaged buildings. It also provided residents and rescuers with several interesting insights.

Quakes can occur at any time. This one struck early in the morning, which lead to poor decision making by residents who were likely groggy, disoriented, and unprepared. For example, many people interviewed cited running towards windows, which could shatter and cause injury. The best thing to do when woken by a quake is to stay in bed, cover your head with a pillow, and wait for the shaking to stop.

Another interesting aspect of this earthquake was that some of the aftershocks were stronger than the quake itself. An aftershock near Whitehorse at 7:00 am registered at 6.3 -- a more violent quake than the original.

During the aftershocks, people were left scrambling for cover amid buildings and structures that were already damaged. When aftershocks occur, it is vitally important not to seek refuge in damaged buildings. Structures must be inspected and cleared by city officials before going inside.

Additionally, quakes don't just affect cities; they can cause landslides and rock falls. A mountain climber, Natalia Martinez of Argentina, found herself trapped during the unstable alpine conditions.

While it's impossible to predict when and where an earthquake will hit, recent events in California and the Pacific Northwest have heightened awareness of the need for emergency planning and earthquake preparedness kits. Risk management is a key step towards the safety and survival of families during the aftermath of a natural disaster.
