A PILOT’S LIFE: FROM A CHILDHOOD DREAM TO AN INCREASINGLY REWARDING REALITY

NEW YORK, NEW YORK, USA, April 18, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ -- PrivateFly conducted a survey in 2016 concerning over 1300 pilots and revealing the growing job satisfaction and rewards of a career that continues to generate notable interest both inside and outside the industry. The survey uncovered how pilots feel about flying, the reasons that attracted them to the air in the first place, and growing job security in the field. Participants spanned globally across the aviation spectrum - involving airline pilots, private aviation pilots and leisure pilots.

In 2012, PrivateFly led a similar survey that identifies changes in the pilots’ perceptions on job security and reward over the course of the four years. A growing number of pilots now receive benefits, more pilots experienced increased earnings and fewer of them are concerned with future oil prices.

“The global pipeline of trained pilots is slowing and the survey shows that this is a major current industry concern for the future. But as a result, today’s pilots appear to be enjoying their relative rarity in the meantime – we saw higher ratings of job satisfaction and security than in 2012,” said Adam Twidell, CEO at PrivateFly.

Key survey findings:
• Over three quarters of the pilots surveyed disclosed aspiring to become a pilot since childhood. With a striking 64% of pilots having flown from day one of their working lives.
• The majority of pilots surveyed enjoy their time in the cockpit, with around a third of them describing flying as “very stimulating and varied.” Amongst these, military pilots gained the most enjoyment from flying, whilst airline pilots were less positive.
• When asked about the most enjoyable aspects of flying, the recurring themes were freedom, challenge and travel.
• Pilots experience high levels of perceived job security, with 88% feeling “very secure” or “fairly secure.”
• While in 2012, around a third of the pilots surveyed stated they received no benefits at all, in 2016 all pilots reported receiving benefits of some kind. Additionally, more pilots saw earnings increase, with almost half reporting they received a salary increase in the last year.
• With oil prices having dropped, only around 10% of pilots chose “fuel costs” as a concern for the future – compared to a striking 66% in 2012.
